چکیده

It is well known that TCP experiences performance problems (unfairness and starvation) in multi-hop wireless networks. Such problems are often traced to the misbehavior of dynamic routing protocols in case of link failure. However, in this paper we show, through simulations, that unfairness and starvation of flows also take place with static routing; thus competition between TCP flows in a multihop TCP network has an unfair outcome, independently of the routing protocol involved. We also show that a simple multi-channel MAC is able to partially solve these problems.

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...

Improving Throughput of Starved TCP Flow by Sidestepping Bottleneck Nodes Using Concurrent Transmission

The TCP congestion control mechanism along with unfairness problem poses poor performance when IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol is used in multi-hop ad hoc networks because the traditional TCP has poor interaction with the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol. Because of the greedy nature of TCP, starvation problem of TCP flows with longer paths is severe. In this paper, we first illustrate that the fairness, cong...

Origins and Solutions of Proportional Unfairness in IEEE 802.11 Multi-hop Wireless Networks

Proportional unfairness exists in multi-hop wireless networks where IEEE 802.11 is employed as the medium access control protocol. This thesis investigates the origins of unfairness and proposes solutions to improve fairness in such networks. This thesis first studies multi-hop topologies consisting of two disjoint flows and four nodes. All possible topologies depending on whether the different...

On Interaction between MAC and Transport Layers for Media Streaming in 802.11 Ad-hoc Networks

We examine the validity of TCP-friendliness and the utility of equation-based congestion control as a mean for the media streaming service in 802.11 multi-hop networks. Our investigation is motivated by the recent findings of the bandwidth-delay product of 802.11 multi-hop networks via intensive computer simulations. We show that TCP behavior in 802.11 multi-hop networks is generally inefficien...

Cooperation between Channel Access Control and TCP Rate Adaptation in Multi-Hop Ad Hoc Networks

In this paper, we propose a new cross-layer scheme Cooperation between channel Access control and TCP Rate Adaptation (CATRA) aiming to manage TCP flow contention in multi-hop ad hoc network. In CATRA scheme, we collect useful information from MAC and physical layers to estimate channel utilization of the station. Based on this information, we adjust Contention Window (CW ) size to control the ...
